Uneven tyre wear

Keeping an eye on the way your tyres are wearing can alert you to hidden problems, so make regular checks on all sides of the tyre. Minor uneven wear can be avoided through tyre rotation, so do this every 6,000m miles/ 6 months. Over or under inflation will cause uneven wear on either the centre of the tread or both shoulders, respectively, so keep your tyres inflated to the manufacturers specification.(note: the pressure printed on the tyre side wall is the maximum pressure at a specified load, not the recommended pressure) A tyre pressure gauge is a cheap investment that could save you having to change tyres prematurely.

Wear that appears on one shoulder of the tyre is probably a sign of either poor wheel alignment possibly damaged suspension. In extreme cases, one side of the tread can be above the legal limit while the other side is worn down to the metal belts within the tyre. Unbalanced wheels can lead to scalloping along the edge of the tyre.
